Salon 105

As Georgette Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, she found that she had fallen out of style. She lay in bed, too distraught to brush away the mess of tangled hair that fell unevenly across her eyes. She knew that if she so much as lifted her hands, she would be forced to confront the mangled cuticles and spotted polish that now spread like a disease across her once-delicate fingers.

After a long while, her callused feet found the carpet and carried her toward the bathroom mirror. "What has happened to me?" she thought. The mirror revealed only the shell of the woman who had, just yesterday, drawn so many stares on the boulevard. Her hair, which strangers had once stroked lovingly on the subway platform, had lost its luster. Her eyes were anchored by the first signs of bags. Their curved shapes were like smiles that taunted her, laughed as if to say… there’s more to come.

She threw on a baggy overcoat and ran outside, her direction unclear. The harsh sun cast its rays on her like so many spotlights, highlighting the unmistakably wrinkled signature of Father Time. She kept running, dragged down by the stares of onlookers.

"I'm a monster!" she cried, taking refuge behind the first door she could find.

"Welcome to Salon 105! How can we help you?" She turned around. In front of her was the interior of a salon, its walls lined with artfully stacked cubes of beauty products and lamps whose glow seemed friendlier than that of their solar counterpart. A row of styling chairs beckoned her forward—in this disheveled state, how could she resist?

"Gimme it all!" she exclaimed. The desperation in her voice surprised even her.

Within minutes, scissors were upon her scalp. She felt her nerves unclenching their collective fist as the stylist clipped and shaped her hair, smothering its frizzy periphery with KeraSpa smoothing complexes and smatterings of Lanza color.

Feeling her old, beautiful self begin to stir beneath the surface of her monstrous exterior, Georgette lowered herself into a manicure station and watched as the technician shaped, trimmed, and polished her nails. She felt the creamy touch of cleansers on her face as an aesthetician tended to her cracking cheeks and eyes.

Some time passed before she rose to look into the mirror. What she saw shook her to the core. Her bangs now fell neatly across her forehead. Trimmed strands danced around her ears with the grace of ballerinas, and the bags beneath her eyes were nothing more than terrible memories. Her nails, which only this morning she had scraped against her bedposts in agony, were clean, delicate, and poised.

A renewed sense of vitality overtook her as she charged through the salon’s doors, making her way out into the street.

"Where have you been?" her roommates asked when she arrived back at the apartment. She couldn’t help but notice their eyes, which studied her features in awe.

"It doesn't matter now," she replied. "I'm back." Before strutting out of the room, she blew each of them a kiss from lips the color of maraschino cherries.

The Groupon Guide to: The Little Engine That Could

The inspirational children's tale The Little Engine That Could was first published in 1906 as Story of the Engine that Thought It Could. Here are the other names the publisher considered before settling on the memorable final title:

  • The Little Engine That Couldn't (Or So He Thought!)
  • The Little Engine That Could Talk but That Wasn't the Most Amazing Part
  • The Little Wuss Train That Tricked Itself into Being Good Enough
  • Murder in Monaco: A Jack Trane Mystery
  • The Little Engine That Could Before Being Made Obsolete by Airplanes

When will airplanes finally be the only form of public transportation?
