Adventurous racers gather in Bunnell on Saturday, May 11, for the FL.ROC challenge, a 4-mile course outfitted with more than 30 obstacles to test runners’ collective mettle. Waves of up 200 competitors leave every half-hour starting at 9 a.m. to crawl across multiple mud pits and scale walls in pursuit of the finish line. Every participant receives a T-shirt and etched pint glass for completing the race, runners that are of age receive a free beer, and top performers are eligible for a bevy of prizes and awards.

FL.ROC Running Obstacle Challenge

FL.ROC's impish staff designed a 4-mile racecourse to break the flat monotony of routine street races. Muddy ponds and walls hinder solo runners and teams as they dash toward the finish line. After conquering an array of obstacles, contestants have time to celebrate and, if 21 or older, tilt back a complimentary beer. The culture of the race is festive: many contestants compete in absurd costumes to scare off mud monsters, and the contestant with the most inventive ensemble receives a prize during the awards ceremony. FL.ROC conducts its wild race all over Florida, and hosts races for charity throughout the year.

The Groupon Guide to: Knowing When to Quit

Sometimes it's better just to quit now than to see it through and find out what it feels like to be a winner (they're eternally happy). Here are some examples of times when you should quit:

  • You're ahead.
  • You're last.
  • You feel like you might throw up.
  • They're giving personal pan pizzas to everyone who quits.
  • Your mentor has downgraded you from "protégé" to "ongoing frustration."
  • You have a chance to create a new identity for yourself in a small New England town if you just walk away now.
  • Quitting is "your thing," according to all of your past fiancés.
  • No one wants you to win because you're a villain, and for you, winning means selling a bunch of elementary schools to an evil corporation that will turn them into recycling centers.

Hi, I'm Stiven Knatts, and I'm glad to be here in Hidden Town, Rhode Island.
