Museum of the African Diaspora
Since 2005, the Museum of the African Diaspora has placed a spotlight on both the history of the dispersal of African people throughout the world as well as the artistic reactions it has inspired. Emphasizing four themes––origin, movement, adaptation, and transformation––the museum's staff has created interactive exhibits where users can watch short videos about African culinary traditions or even mix their own music.
Contemporary paintings, installations, and photographs by artists such as Alison Saar interpret diaspora’s social and emotional ramifications, while rotating exhibitions explore diverse subjects ranging from North African jewelry to studies on oppression and pan-Africanism. Alongside its permanent and temporary displays, the museum hosts events including film screenings and educator workshops, as well as online exhibits on topics such as slave narratives.
