The Issue: Lack of Resources for Children's Clothing

Food, housing, healthcare, childcare, transportation, taxes—combined these can become a weight that a single parent struggles with. In San Mateo County, a single-parent household with one preschooler and one school-age child needed nearly $79,000 in 2011 to meet their basic needs, according to a report from the Insight Center for Community Economic Development. For families struggling to meet this cost of living, new shoes and clothing for their children to start the school year can seem like a luxury.

The Campaign: Providing New Shoes to Homeless and Very Low-Income Children

All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by My New Red Shoes to provide new footwear to homeless and very low-income children in the Bay Area. For every $300 raised, My New Red Shoes can provide one pair of new shoes to 30 children from low-income families and families experiencing homelessness. The shoes arrive to children in fabric gift bags hand-sewn by volunteers, alongside a note from the volunteer wishing each child good luck at school. My New Red Shoes hopes to be able to provide new shoes to 6,000 children in all nine Bay Area counties in 2013.

My New Red Shoes

The first day of school can be one of excitement and anticipation. But it can also be a day of anxiety, of stress, of fearing that you'll stand out for all the wrong reasons. For kids from low-income families or families experiencing homelessness, the latter is more often the case. But My New Red Shoes works to eliminate that stress. Partnering with homeless shelters and community agencies, My New Red Shoes identifies homeless and very low-income children in need of clothing and shoes, and works with thousands of volunteers—from Girl Scouts to families—to meet that need. Children as young as four help the organization sort shoes and create cards to wish students luck on their first day. And equipped with their new footwear and that vote of confidence, the students can look forward to a new year.
