The Fine Print

Without the adequate funding, many nonprofits throughout the Chicagoland area lack the means necessary to create and support their own websites. Through its Overnight Website Challenge, The Nerdery enlists the expertise of local web-professional volunteers to address this need by pairing them up with nonprofits and challenging them to create a website in 24 hours.

On August 20–21, volunteer web professionals at The Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge will type tirelessly to create a nonprofit website in 24 hours, breaking only for meals and occasional games of office-chair racing. Teams of 8–10 volunteers consult with one of 10 organizations, including Crossroads Adoption Services, Kids Have Hope, and the Hemophilia Foundation of Illinois. While their efforts to create a quality website are entirely pro bono, funds from outside donors keep volunteers perky with plenty of fair-trade coffee, energy drinks, and caffeinated keyboards. Thanks to energy-inducing sustenance, in the past four years teams have donated $1.5 million worth of web services, serving 57 organizations.

Join G-Team and donate $5 to equip volunteer web professionals with 24 hours of caffeine during The Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge. If G-Team members raise $250, 50 nerds taking part in the challenge will have enough caffeine to last them 24 hours. Each additional $5 raised will fund 24 hours of caffeine for another volunteer. All donations will be matched by Nerdery Interactive Labs.

Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.

The Groupon Guide to: Banishing a Ghost

The popularity of ultraviolet light fixtures has revealed a disturbing side effect—more than 50% of homes are considered haunted, partially haunted, or tightly wadded with ghosts. Follow this handy guide to spurning any spurious specters who might be darkening your doorways:

  • Step One: Establish a Rapport. Most ghosts are lingering behind due to unfinished business. Try earning the ghost's trust by leaving out a saucer of ghost-water (milk), and breaking the ice with this classic unfinished-business joke: Q: What kind of sheet does a business ghost wear? A: A spreadsheet!

  • Step Two: Aid the Transition. As an ethereal bag of phosphorescence and moaning, the ghost will most likely need your help finishing its posthumous errands. Do whatever it asks of you, from guiltily replacing the forgeries it swapped for the Oval Office's famous baseball collection to letting it briefly possess your body in order to reconnect with its lost love so it can raise a family.

  • Step Three: Enough Is Enough. If the ghost still has not moved on, capture the ghost in a vacuum-cleaner canister, then seal the canister in a cube of concrete. If you feel the need, write the word idiot on the side of the cube using a stick of paraffin (the ghost will be able to feel this). Set some magazines on top of the cube. Continue living your life.
