About New Mexico Arts & Crafts Fair
The first-ever New Mexico Arts & Crafts Fair took place on July 26, 1962—a date chosen to coincide with New Mexico's 50th anniversary as a state. By 1969, the event had become so popular that it was forced to move from its original Old Town Plaza location to the New Mexico Fair Grounds. That year also marked the first time visitors had to pay an entry fee: then, just a quarter.
Every year since its inception, the fair has continued to expand, both in terms of visitors and number of exhibitors. Another of the fair's running themes has been its focus on youth artists, with students ranging from pre-school to high school competing for prizes. Additionally, to make sure it showcases the state's most original works, the fair employs a distinguished panel of jurors to filter out pieces intended for commercial use or as parts of an unauthorized time machine.
