Aquatic gurus teach novices paddleboard basics before setting off on 75-minute guided tours of Indian River & snapping photos of paddlers
Stand-up paddleboarding was invented when an impatient surfer brought out a weapon to beat the wave-less ocean into compliance. Enjoy the calm he accidentally discovered with today's Groupon: for $45, you get a standup-paddleboard adventure for two from New Smyrna Stand Up (a $90 value). The adventure includes:
- 15-minute paddleboard orientation
- 75-minute guided paddle on the Indian River
- Refreshments Photos of tour posted on Facebook
New Smyrna Stand Up’s expert waterway shepherds meet paddlers at various locations along the Indian River, introduce neophytes to the basics of paddleboarding, and then set out on guided tours of the river. During 15-minute orientations, the aquatic gurus teach apprentices proper foot placement, board control, how to turn, and how to out-sing sirens. Next, merry bands traverse the scenic mangrove-lined Indian River, where during a mid-tour island stop they can relax, spy marine mammals and birds, and sip provided refreshments. The tours take place throughout the day, and some tour-goers can glide through the crystal water at sunset while it's bathed in brilliant reds and golds. After the adventure, New Smyrna Stand Up's resident shutterbug posts paddling photos taken that day in a Facebook album and on neighbors' fridges.

About New Smyrna Stand Up
For years, New Smyrna residents have paddled throughout the marshy backwaters of the Indian River lagoon, finding solace among the area's gentle tides, unclouded skies, and abundance of marine life. United by a respect for their natural surroundings and a knack for paddleboarding, a local family joined forces to form the award-winning New Smyrna Stand Up. With dolphins and manatees swimming below and ospreys sailing above, the experienced guides lead tours down the river, journeying out into the ocean when weather permits. In the summer months, the center conducts children's camps, in which youngsters learn paddleboarding techniques while exploring the area's ecosystem. They study local wildlife and marine creatures and learn to identify the origins of passing inner-tubers by the shape of their heads. In addition to tours and camps, the staff offers paddleboard rentals and standup-paddleboard surfing lessons.
