In a Nutshell

Donations fund wellness counseling sessions to teach people with HIV/AIDS how to maintain physical and psychological health

The Fine Print

The Issue: Effect of Psychological Factors on Physical Health

Psychological and social factors can affect the functioning of the nervous and immune systems, thereby easing or exacerbating the impact of HIV/AIDS on a person’s health, according to a report from the University of California, San Francisco Center for HIV Information. People with HIV/AIDS often have trouble interacting socially, dealing with negative emotions, and participating in disease management, and this difficulty can speed up the progression of the disease. Learning about their health—and the disease’s impact on it—can help people with HIV/AIDS live longer and more peacefully.

The Campaign: Counseling People with AIDS/HIV

If 39 people donate $14 to this Grassroots campaign, then NO/AIDS Task Force can sponsor the participation of three people in its Shanti program. The Shanti LIFE (Learning Immune Function Enhancement) program empowers people living with HIV/AIDS by teaching them about the link between social relationships, psychological issues, and physical health. A step-by-step series of 13 half-day counseling sessions focuses on supporting the immune system and enhancing survival time. Each additional $182 raised can fund participation in the Shanti LIFE program for another person.
