Choose Between Two Options

Depending on climbing conditions, groups will meet either in Auburn, MA or at Crawford Notch State Park in the White Mountains. From there, an expert instructor will guide beginning climbers through the basics of ice climbing, including how to judge the safety of the ice, choosing optimal crampon placements, and swinging an ice axe in a way that is both effective and reminiscent of Paul Bunyan. All technical gear is provided, though climbers are advised to bring their own boots or rent them for an additional cost. View the FAQ for suggestions on what to wear and bring.

North Ridge Mountain Guides

North Ridge Mountain Guides founder Jamie Leahy first fell in love with scaling peaks while tackling the heights of Mount Washington. The AMGA certified single-pitch instructor has since defied gravity on inclines of ice and rock around the United States and in Ecuador, summiting peaks of more than 19,000 feet to touch the sky and harvest his crops of clouds by following a simple philosophy: climb hard, climb safe. This mantra guides his approach to teaching the ins and outs of belaying and rappelling and steers the expeditions he leads up the less-traveled routes of Mount Monadnock. He also shares the art of ice climbing with pupils during introductory courses that delve into subjects such as crampon placement, swinging an ice axe, and how to read the ice, which often obscures its messages in Wingdings fonts.

The Groupon Guide to: Impromptu Holiday Games

With holiday season in full swing, there's no shortage of dinner parties to attend. If your host doesn't own any board games, save the evening by suggesting a game that can be played without gaming equipment:

Bang, Bang, Hear, Hear: Have one person grab a fork, spoon, and knife. After everyone else closes their eyes, the person holding the utensils will start banging one of the three against the dinner table. The first person to correctly guess what the banger is banging wins and gets to leave the game.

Noise Town: Break off into groups of two. Each pair builds a unique city by creating a soundscape using the sounds that come out of their mouths. The team that builds the loudest town gets the grand prize—getting to wait outside until the other teams stop.

My Country, Your Country: One person starts the game by approaching another person and saying "My country." The person has to respond, as quickly as possible, "Your country?" The first person then must say "My country" again, this time faster than the second person said "Your country?" This keeps going until everyone feels compelled to simultaneously shout "The holidays: are these not the finest times of our years?" Then everyone gets to leave.

Should December be called Game-cember?
