- $100 for a two-hour storm and disaster preparedness class (a $250 value)
Since they have years of field experience in emergency and disaster situations, the teachers of Disaster Preparation and Survival 101 are able to give students firsthand tips. They’ll teach pupils what they need to stock in case of a storm or manmade disaster, how to create a safe room or an evacuation plan, how to decide when to ride out the storm and when to run, and how to set up a disaster co-op in their neighborhood. Instructors also give pupils tips on post-disaster survival, such as how to live without power, how to obtain food and water, and how to defend themselves and their family.
On Guard International
March of 2003 could have been a historic month for the Port of Miami. Thanks to Commander Armin D. Cate, it wasn't. The former Homeland Security official helped thwart a domestic terrorist plot slated to strike South Florida; he had created the national program that detected the threat. And this was just one of his many national-security accomplishments. As part of the team at On Guard International, Armin brings the experience he gained during his 34 years in the business to smaller-scale security services. On a more personal level, Commander Cate has survived four major hurricanes on land and at sea, including a total loss of his home and belongings after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. He and the rest of the staff help assess security within companies, homes, schools, and even airports, then implement strategies—often in the form of bodyguards or security systems—to augment them.
