Sanctioned by the International Chili Society, the third annual NYC Chili Cookoff welcomes eaters and competers for a weekend of tasting and sniffing. On Saturday, fest-goers sample from pots simmering with traditional chili, chili verde, and homemade salsas, voting for their favorites along the way. Live entertainment supplements chowdowns, and kiddie rides (tickets required) keep tykes from sentencing dolls to dips into boiling cauldrons filled with spicy chili taste-testers’ tears. On Sunday, grillmasters season and slow-cook chicken, pork ribs, pork butt, and brisket to be judged by judges from the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Up to 20 area teams will compete for the $2,500 grand prize, which will be announced that evening at 5:30 p.m.
Historic Richmond Town ushers guests into a living museum of historical buildings and a working farm spread across more than 100 acres that recreates the experience of Dutch and English settlers in the 1700s. Members can explore the town’s anachronistic exhibits at any time they fancy and receive discounts on other events throughout the year, such as future tastings or butter-churning contests.
