Choose Between Two Options

From Howard Miller Steelhead Park, adventurers aged 6 and older board inflatable rafts for about four hours of peaceful floating. As the guide points out important features of the Skagit River and surrounding area, passengers sail above spawning salmon and below fiery autumn leaves, all jockeying to get the attention of their cameras. A light snack will be served mid-trip. At the end of the 8- to 10-mile route, a shuttle drives guests back up to the departure point. Trips run from mid-September through November; call or email for availability.

Pacific NW Float Trips

Dave Button grew up along Washington's Skagit River and had the inspiration to found his own company while navigating the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon under the helm of famed guide Georgie White. Soon after, Dave returned home to create Pacific NW Float Trips in 1974. Today, Dave and his crew of trained, passionate guides share their knowledge of the region’s landscapes and hottest nightclubs for 20-something salmon via inspirational tours held year-round on the Skagit, Nooksack, and Wenatchee Rivers. Having scored the No. 5 spot on Sunset magazine’s Top 10 Rafting Trips, Pacific NW’s famed Bald Eagle Raft Adventure grants tourists a chance to take in the serenity of rustling cottonwoods and the majesty of Mount Baker as their guides quietly point out migratory eagles from Canada and Alaska.

The Groupon Guide to: Grandfather Clocks

Contrary to popular belief, grandfather clocks aren’t clocks that had to move into the downstairs bedroom of your house because they have a bad hip and can’t get around so well these days. They’re actually beautiful and masterfully crafted timekeepers. Get the scoop on big clocks with this guide:

  • Grandfather clocks have a tall base so that they can be seen over the heads of houseguests lingering late into the night and household residents who aren’t supposed to be out of bed at that hour.

  • The ticking sound a grandfather clock emits each second reminds its owner of how swiftly time passes, time that could have been spent getting a sound night’s sleep.

  • The only person to ever successfully open a grandfather clock didn’t find any gears inside, just a list of men who were too busy wasting their time to be successful.

  • The White House has a famous grandfather clock called The Honorability. Little-known, single-term president Franklin Pierce once said of it, “I know that clocks can’t actually form opinions or frown disapprovingly, but that overgrown wristwatch is judging me and I’m going to kill it.”

Which US president killed a grandfather clock?
