$269 for an Open-Water Scuba-Certification Course ($550 Value)

Four-day PADI open-water courses kick off at 5 p.m. on Mondays with a four-hour classroom session. Equipped with an included logbook, students then head to the pool from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the following Tuesday to complete five confined-water dives and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday of the same week, pupils voyage to the ocean for a total of four open-water dives. Upon successful completion, students receive a PADI certification card and a certificate of achievement.

Pupils must take a swim-qualification test, but all pool-training fees and most materials—including a buoyancy compensator, regulator, tank, weights, a 7-millimeter wetsuit, and a shark-lullaby book—are included. Students must purchase their own course book ($45) and must provide or rent their own mask, snorkel, fins, booties, and gloves ($15).

PB Sports’s facilities extend beyond the walls of its pastel-yellow shop and into the glistening waves of the nearby Pacific Ocean. The full-service store’s seasoned crew outfits aquatic adventurers with the equipment and skills necessary to conquer the picturesque waterscapes, renting out diving gear, paddleboards, and boogie boards that allow riders to glide along the shores as swiftly as a jet-powered starfish. They also harness their in-depth knowledge of the area to pilot guided snorkel tours and shore dives through naturally beautiful locales such as La Jolla Cove, where seals, fish, and other wildlife frolic past swimmers. Back inside the shop, staffers line shelves with new and refurbished surfboards, and they train nascent underwater explorers how to feed peanut butter to jellyfish during scuba-certification courses.
