Pegasus Restaurant and Taverna
A family from the Patras region on Greece's western coast decided to bring the Mediterranean influences of home to Chicago's Greektown, opening Pegasus Restaurant and Taverna. Though diners can find Greek favorites such as saganaki and gyros on the menu, the servers also recommend kitchen specialties such as char-grilled octopus and center-cut lamb chops. Once or twice a week, they'll fly in fresh Mediterranean sea bass, which chefs filet tableside before seasoning it simply with salt, pepper, olive oil, and oregano.
The chefs use spices imported from Greece to season their dishes and get fresh bread from their sister restaurant, the nearby Artopolis Bakery and Cafe. In the main dining room, bright-blue accents stand against breezy whites and creams, and an eye-popping mural of an island vista stands next to white-draped tables. In addition to a private area that can be reserved for events, an outdoor veranda provides a place for guests to devour mezedes, or small plates, as they gaze at Chicago's skyline and watch hobbyists float between buildings, clutching the wings of giant birds.
