Phil's Last Stand

Since its eponymous owner Fat Phil, local food blogger and hot-dog connoisseur opened Phil's Last Stand in early 2012, the restaurant has earned accolades from myriad local press outlets. The Chicago Reader warns that "to dismiss Phil's would be a mistake" calling its signature offering "a truly excellent, snappy char dog." TimeOut Chicago agreed, naming it Best New Hot Dog Stand, and Serious Eats Chicago says its burgers are "in a whole other league."

Though small, the eatery's bright-red exterior makes it hard to miss. Picnic tables outside enable diners to eat alfresco, and inside, a charcoal grill stays fired up as late as 4 a.m. to cater to late-night revelers. The grill's flames crisp the natural casing on hot dogs and polish sausages and brand burgers with evenly spaced lines. The kitchen also fries freshly breaded jumbo shrimp, 2 pounds of which are folded into an enormous po' boy during the Fatso's Challenge. Anyone brave enough to try the challenge must finish the behemoth sandwich within 60 minutes in order to win a T-shirt, his or her name engraved on a plaque, and at least three pats on the back.

The Groupon Guide to: Star Treatment

If reality TV has taught us anything, it's that you don't need to be a celebrity to demand to be treated like one. Follow these tips of the rich and famous to start living like a star right away:

  • Spend money conspicuously. If you see a dress you want, tell the clerk "I must have this dress." Then pay him $3,200 to explain that nothing in the glass cases is for sale because you are in the Regional Whaling Museum.

  • Acquire a dog slightly too big for your purse. This will ensure that the dog's head is always visible and that the dog does not get lost in the bottom of your purse with half-eaten packages of Certs, containers of Carmex, and drawings of your future butler.

  • Dine exclusively at Carl's Jr., the only restaurant worthy of having a star right in their logo.

  • Get into any club by telling the bouncer "I just bought this place." By the time they reach Deborah Kovacs at Moreno Group Realtors & Mortgage to confirm your equity, you'll have already danced the night away.

How can you get celebrity treatment on a tight budget? Find out in today's Groupon Guide.
