Choose Between Two Options

  • $95 for a six-session scuba certification course (a $195 value)
  • $195 for the above scuba certification course with an overnight weekend certification trip to Lake Pleasant (a $395 value)

Classes run Tuesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each weekend day encompasses two sessions, one in the classroom and one in the pool. For in-water instruction, students must provide their own mask, fins, snorkel, and booties, which are available for purchase from Planet Scuba; the class provides a buoyancy control device, regulator, computer, wetsuit, and personal log book. Trips to Lake Pleasant include four checkout dives, which span a Saturday and a Sunday morning. The lake is located a 2.5-hour drive from Tuscon; overnight accommodation and transportation there and back are not included in this deal.

Planet Scuba

Christopher Goodwill and Michael Makoid met while diving in the Sea of Cortez. The duo’s shared passion for scuba led them to found Planet Scuba; nowadays, they lead fellow divers on trips to the sea where they first met, as well as to Key Largo, St. Croix, and other exotic locales.

The shop arms patrons for independent dive trips as well with open-water certification courses. During 22 hours of coursework that combine classroom instruction and pool lessons, students learn basic diving techniques, such as removing the helium balloons tied to their wrists. Classes close with an optional overnight dive trip, on which students earn their certification. The gear store—which stocks equipment for snorkeling and swimming as well as diving—can equip aquatic explorers for any kind of expedition.
