Playing a musical instrument is a skill that will serve you throughout your entire life, like safe cracking, horse punching, and toddler juggling. Add to your resumé with today's Groupon: for $69, you get eight group lessons and materials to Play Piano in a Flash at Piano Kraft with instructor Don Nichols (a $199 value). Classes are scheduled for Tuesdays at 11:15 a.m. and Monday evenings at 5:30 p.m., though more classes may be added to accommodate additional students.
Using Emmy Award–winner Scott Houston's proven teaching method, Don Nichols guides teens and adults through beginner ivory-tickling lessons. Rather than decipher complicated sheet music, students learn through observation and lead sheets, a sort of shorthand method extracted from the personal diary of the first playerless piano. During the course of eight consecutive weeks, students probe a book's worth of material, mastering one song every week, while adding three or four other songs per week from a provided gig book. While left hands vamp through various chords and arpeggios, right hands meander the treble clef, unchaining melodies and artfully throwing them into the eardrums of passersby.
