Pounds & Ounces
With stately décor juxtaposed against splashy murals and funky music, Pounds & Ounces is a little bit traditional and a little bit unorthodox. That makes this Chelsea staple the perfect fit for their new executive chef, Jeff Kreisel, whose classical training has been tempered by the imaginative nature of the NYC restaurant scene. Jeff roots his culinary voice in classic French cuisine, but possesses more than a decade of industry experience—former positions include sous chef under celebrity gastronome Michael Lomanaco at Porter House, where he devised a critically acclaimed menu and was soon appointed to chef de cuisine. This time in the trenches has helped him translate his free-wheeling attitude into a unique style of American cuisine. The result: tuna tartar tacos in crispy wontons and a grilled kale caesar salad topped with white anchovies. Inside Pounds & Ounces' kitchen, he draws on local, seasonal ingredients to pair these surprises with entrees of rustic steak, seafood, and gluten-free dishes.
The Pounds & Ounces aesthetic matches Kreisel's eclectic approach perfectly. Mixed with refined hardwoods and old stone are colorful flourishes, such as orbs of flowers and a phantasmagoric mural. The floor's vintage tiling is juxtaposed with the dining room's centerpiece: a communal 30-person table constructed from gleaming metal and lustrous alabaster.
