Prairie Lights

For roughly one month of the year, cars drive through Lynn Creek Park on a shimmering safari. Families glimpse herds of grazing deer, frolicking snowmen, and trees that glow from top to bottom—all built from countless strands of lights. The displays decorate 2 miles of road with seasonal models and overarching marquees, permitting vehicles to switch off their headlights as they navigate the luminous wonderland. At the end of the journey, cars pass through a long tunnel strung entirely in lights to evoke the journey of a rocket ship into starry space or that of a shrink-rayed scientist into his daughter's Lite-Brite.

The center of the park is home to the Holiday Village—a pit stop where visitors park and explore a medley of seasonal attractions. Santa himself awaits Christmas requests beneath a humongous tent flanked by free carnival rides such as a vibrant carousel, and concession stands slide mugs of hot cocoa, cider, and coffee over their counters to complement funnel cakes and kettle corn. Uplifting songs reverberate inside the Holiday Magic Theater, where snow drifts down from the ceiling onto the audience as the cast of Texas Family Musicals Inc. performs Holiday Magic! Live. Visitors can also explore the glowing scenery of the Holiday Magic Lighted Walk-Thru Forest—a stretch of trail that collages holiday celebrations from around the world and surprises guests with its all-new Gumdrop Alley.

The Groupon Guide to: Preserving Leftovers

With the right techniques and a lot of luck, there's no reason that this year's holiday leftovers won't be edible next year. Here's how you can keep your scraps fresh:

  • Store food in airtight containers. To make sure there's no leak, add in a bunch of ants and see if they can survive.

  • Before storing the food, cut off any pieces that have clearly been chewed. If you don't, and the person that chewed that food isn't around for the next Thanksgiving, you'll be feeling pretty sad when you pull those leftovers out and recognize their bite pattern.

  • The freezer is your best friend, in that it will prevent food from spoiling, and your worst enemy, in that it is so perfectly sized to fit a human body and has that alluring pristinely white interior, and whenever you open the door it sounds like it's saying, "Please come inside. I'm warmer than I look." Please be careful near freezers.

  • Save your leftovers the same way our forefathers did—by feeding the scraps to their horses then hoping the horses would give them back exactly one year later.

If you think those mashed potatoes are good now, wait till you try them in a year!
