Grapes of Rock

The Grapes of Rock festival celebrates the Pacific Coast's wine culture and charitable spirit with three days of racing, tasting, and rock and roll. Following a Friday-evening welcome party in downtown Healdsburg, racers gather fresh and ready to run Saturday morning for a 13.1-mile half marathon along the secluded rural roads of Dry Creek Valley and the Sonoma backcountry. Beginning in the town of Healdsburg, the route takes participants past vineyard-laden hillsides and merlot-spewing geysers, ending beside Lake Sonoma, where runners receive finishing medals and commemorative wine glasses. Those glasses can immediately find use with samples from a handful of local wineries and craft breweries such as Lagunitas Brewing Company.

Before the racers reach the finish line, Pop Rocks—the self-proclaimed "Most Interesting Band in the World"—gathers a crowd with a cover set laden with radio classics from the '80s to today. Pete Springfellow, featuring Chris Hayes, then heats up the stage for headliner and rock legend Bret Michaels. As the lead singer of Poison, Bret gave the world monster hits such as “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and “Nothing But a Good Time,” and as a philanthropist, he’s used his celebrity powers to battle diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. Crowds cheer, lighters ignite, and pajamas bum rush the stage as Bret gets down and dirty with rowdy party anthems. Later in the set, he ushers fans to his metaphorical fireplace with heartfelt ballads that prove that beneath the steely eyes and brawny bravado lies a man who feels bad about stealing your girlfriend.

The event concludes on Sunday with another opportunity to mingle over samples of bold zinfandels and crisp sauvignon blancs from more than 15 local producers, including Mauritson Family Winery and Trattore Wines. All of the proceeds from Grapes of Rock will go to benefit the Salvation Army of Santa Rosa as well as local charities selected by the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley and the Dry Creek Valley Association.
