Designed for students who possess the basics of handling a firearm, the CPL training course qualifies participants to apply for a Michigan concealed-pistol license, which is recognized in more than 30 states. An NRA-certified instructor focuses on defensive shooting through classroom work that covers state and national laws, plus live-fire training that concentrates on marksmanship fundamentals. The class typically lasts at least eight hours and concludes with a written test. Those who pass receive a certificate of completion, a necessary document for the CPL application process. Tuition does not include any further costs associated with applying for a CPL, such as Michigan's $105 application fee. Classes are typically scheduled on select Saturdays, starting at 8:30 a.m.

Protection Tactics, LLC

NRA-certified pistol instructor Steve Washington, a veteran of the US Army and National Guard, has taught gun handling and safety techniques to military and law-enforcement personnel for more than 20 years. In 2011, he partnered up with retired Michigan State Trooper Charles Hockey to open Protection Tactics, LLC, bringing their combined firearms expertise to locals. Instead of having students come to them, the duo travels to communities around Michigan to conduct courses such as the Basic Pistol class, which instills pistol and ammunition knowledge and instructs one- and two-handed firing stances. Additionally, Steve and Charles host Bullets, BBQ & Brews events where qualified participants try out various firearm models on paper targets that regret not taking a job as a page in a book.
