But you generally won't have to look for these kayaks within the white waters of British Columbia's scariest rapids; since the school's founding in 1986, it has catered primarily to beginners looking to get their feet wet in calmer waters. In fact, one of the most popular classes, the two-hour Give it a Whirl session, sticks to the glassy waters of Cultus Lake to help first-timers get a feel for paddling. Once you're ready to take on a stronger current, the school offers more advanced courses with a low student-teacher ratio. Introductory courses teach the basic strokes and strategies necessary to make it safely downstream, while instructors ramp up the difficulty in intermediate courses by balancing an egg on each student's head.
