The Issue: Feline Homelessness and Euthanasia

Homelessness is the single leading cause of death for healthy cats and dogs in the United States, according to facts supplied by the Washington Alliance for Humane Legislation. Five to seven million homeless companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and approximately 70% of cats – including tens of thousands in Washington state – are euthanized due to a lack of space or resources to adequately care for them, according to statistics from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Spaying and neutering helps to reduce the number of unwanted litters, thus keeping cats and kittens out of shelters where they may be euthanized and off the streets where they might otherwise fall victim to starvation, cruelty, and neglect.

The Campaign: Spaying or Neutering Cats

All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by Purrfect Pals to perform free spaying or neutering surgery on feral cats and cats from low-income households, and provide them with a vaccination. For every $30 raised, the organization can provide care for one cat.

Purrfect Pals

Kathy Centala has been a proud cat lover for 25 years. When she founded Purrfect Pals in 1988, she operated the organization as a modest cat boarding facility that took in the occasional homeless cat. However, she quickly recognized that these homeless kitties were part of a much large group of cats in need, and she began taking on more and more cats rather than let suffer from hunger and neglect on the streets. When she ran out of room at home, she moved the organization to a five-acre estate in rural Arlington, Washington, allowing her to provide a loving temporary home for cats and broaden her goal to putting an end to feline homelessness in Puget Sound.

Today, her organization provides a sanctuary where all cats – including feral cats, cats suffering from leukemia and FIV, and cats with behavioral issues – can enjoy the love and attention they deserve. Kathy’s adoption and rehabilitation programs allow Purrfect Pals to place more than 2,500 cats and kittens in loving homes each year. Furthermore, she seeks to educate families on the importance of spaying and neutering and humane ownership.
