Sensei Shimabuku teaches the dedication and focus essential to practice the isshinryu discipline in classes for ages 6 and older on Monday and Wednesday. Isshinryu karate emphasizes quick, snap-like motions that come from natural stances to eliminate any wasteful motions. All students must purchase an additional gi and patch ($40) in order to participate in classes.

  • $30 for 30 days of unlimited krav maga classes (a $60 value)
  • $39 for a punch card for 10 krav maga classes (a $100 value)
  • $69 for a punch card for 20 krav maga classes (a $200 value)

Krav maga was originally developed by and for the Israeli Defense Force, and with regular practice the martial art equips its students with split-second responses to modern-day, real-world attacks. Without the use of weapons, these responses typically combine offensive and defensive moves into a single riposte, such as the act of deflecting the point of a rifle while simultaneously using the other end of the rifle to strike the person holding it. Adult students gather in groups of 20 every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday at 7 p.m. to practice footwork, spar, and train their brains to deal with panic. Kids can partake in less rigorous sessions on Tuesday and Thursday, and teens may join the adult sessions on Monday and Friday.

Ram’s Self Defense

Dustin Ramsden's job is to enforce the law, which means he's never terribly surprised to hear about someone breaking it. As a response, Dustin uses his 18 years of martial-arts training to help citizens defend themselves in classroom environments and on the street. He and colleague Dee Schunk-Chrisman employ the highly practical systems of krav maga⎯a martial art developed by the Israeli Defense Force for use in combat zones⎯to give their students a fighting chance against a real-world aggressor. The pair of instructors design classroom attacks to emulate real-life circumstances, dimming lights or stepping outside to train students to deal with stress, darkness, and unexpected variables. Above the mirrors that line the walls of Ram’s Self Defense school, red paint spells out such phrases as “self-control,” “perseverance,” and “indomitable spirit,” which reminds practitioners not to fight ghosts.
