Annuals: Nature’s Fleeting Beauties
Although their beauty beguiles from spring through fall, some flowers may never make it past winter. Check out Groupon’s guide to annuals to help you choose the right plant.
To us, the end of autumn means breaking out your winter coat, but to some plants, it means saying your last goodbyes from your flower beds. Unlike perennials or biennials, whose roots survive through the winter, annuals complete their entire life cycle in one growing season with both their stems and roots dying under the frost. There is hope for some, however, who manage to drop seeds before they pass, causing the next generation to sprout in the same spot in the spring.
Some annuals can endure the seasonal change better than others. Hardy annuals, which include pansies, larkspurs, and foxgloves, can tolerate a little frost and freezing weather, whereas half-hardy annuals such as baby’s breath and forget-me-nots shrivel in the frost but can stick it out in cold, damp weather. Finally, tender annuals, including impatiens, marigolds, and petunias, are fragile, suited mostly for warmer climates or temperature-controlled greenhouses. It may seem counterintuitive to invest in such short-lived plants, but many gardeners and landscapers cherish annuals for their beauty and affordability, as they tend to be cheaper than perennials such as tulips and money trees.
