Does the course give you a Basic Keelboat Certification from the American Sailing Association or are additional courses required beyond what is covered in the lessons? If additional courses are required can you buy 2 sets of keelboat lessons and meet the requirements?

Sumeet J.

Basic Keelboat 1 doesn’t provide ASA certification. Basic Keelboat 2 is required before certification. You cannot buy two Groupons to use on both lessons.

However, Abby is looking into whether or not you can buy the one and use that for their package deal (Basic Keelboat 1 & 2) for $675. So the package would then only be $485.

Great, thanks for the update.

Abby

Hi everyone,
This is Abby from Spinnaker. I wanted to clarify a couple common questions I have been getting to save you confusion or a headache.
This is for Basic Keelboat 1 ONLY, it does not apply to BK2, BK2 is $375, the normal BK1 and 2 package discount that we give does not apply to this deal.
We want to introduce people to sailing and our school and get you started on the path to certification.
After taking BK1 you need to take BK2 ($375), after that class you take a written test and become ASA certified for Basic Keelboat Sailing. This does not qualify you to rent boats from us, you then have to take Basic Coastal Çruising which is $675. After that class you take another test and you then are certified to charter boats on your own up to 27’ in length from the ASA.

I will follow the feed to answer any other questions that arise,
fair winds,
Abby

So is there any chance to use this groupon for the BK 1&2 for $485 that the other person mentioned could be a possibility? I would definitely buy it then.

Abby

No the deal does not apply to the BK2 class. The BK2 class is $375. The 50% off BK1 is a special better offer that we are running instead of the normal package deal.
Sorry but this special deal is just for BK1 to get people a start on sailing lessons!

So wait, just so I have this straight: If I want to get completely certified and rent boats, I have 2 options:

Option 1 – Do Not Buy the Groupon
- Original Package Deal for BK1&2 – $675
- Coastal Cruising – $675
Total = $1350

Option 2 – Buy the Groupon
- Groupon for BK1 – $185
- BK2 Course at Full Price – $375
- Coastal Cruising – $675
Total = $1235

So, option 2 (buying the Groupon) would still be the cheapest route to getting a certification. Is this correct?

people—just my two cents but I had a horrible experience with this school—their equipment kept breaking down, I think we went thru 3 different boats over the course of 2 weekends, and I found the attitude of at lease one of their instructors so cavalier that he had me perform a maneuver that caused an injury (he had me stop the momentum of the boat we were on by grabbing onto another boat tied to the dock so we could swap out our broken engine—hence our inability to stop on our own…)

again, just my 2 cents—i haven’t posted on yelp or anything because that’s not typically my style but i do feel the need to warn my groupon community-mates…

Abby

Yes the groupon is still the cheapest route no matter which way you crunch the numbers.
We do have a sailing club that ultimately saves you money so it is possible to get discounts on BK2 and BCC, but you can join and still save money after you have taken the BK1 and had a chance to check our school and instructors and boats out. The info for that is on our website. http://www.spinnaker-sailing.com/lessons.htm
The groupon deal is the best way to get started and see if you like sailing and how far you want to take it. The membership works if you want to get certified and then rent boats from us.

Carson C.

Can the “pair” of lessons be applied for two people on one lesson?

Erica G.

Hi Carson,

Each Groupon is for 1 person to complete the lesson.

Thanks for checking, and get your Groupon!

Is this basic keelboating course standard across different schools? Say, we take this with spinnaker, would we then be able to take the basic keelboating 2nd certification course with another company and be able to rent different companies? or, are we kinda locking ourselves down? just curious how this stuff works, thanks!

great intro experience to sailing! i look forward to continuing the steps to get my asa certification with this company!
