Questions and Answers

how long does it take for the fungus to be completely removed from the nail bed?

Kris, the laser kills the fungus by generating heat as a result of the pigment within the nail as a result of the infection. We recommend two treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. While the effect of the laser is immediate, the nail will have to grow out for these changes to be visible. As the nail grows you will see a clear, healthy appearing nail at the base and it typically takes 8-9 months for the infected nail to be completely replaced by the healthy, clear nail. Finger nails tend to grow at a faster rate, and the full effects can be visible in as little as 3 months.

What type of laser (mfg?) is used for this procedure?

Dr. Sibel uses the GenesisPlus. GenesisPlus is a Nd:YAG 1064nm laser that has been cleared by the FDA to be both a safe and effective solution for the treatment of nail infection (onychomycosis), more commonly know as toenail fungus.
