Today’s deal treats you to a Christmas tradition as hallowed and beloved as watching It’s a Wonderful Life in out-of-order snippets across 38 different channels. For $20, you get tickets to the San Diego Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker (a $40 value). Tickets are available for performances at the East County Performing Arts Center (general seating, rows P–Z, December 4–5) and the Mandeville Center at La Jolla UCSD (general seating section B, rows B–L, December 17–18).
Though this is the celebrated dance company’s 20th year performing Tchaikovsky’s classic Christmas fantasy, the San Diego Ballet keeps finding new ways to keep it fresh and fast-paced. Its mission is to excite, enrich, and entertain the audience with a genre-bending fusion of classical and contemporary dance. SDB also maintains all the treasured hallmarks of the show: surreal battles with legions of rats; leaping Cossacks, sugarplum fairies, flowers, and snowflakes cavorting in beautiful costumes; and one of the most sublime ballet scores in music history.
Today’s Groupon would make a great pre-holiday goodie for all your friends and family. Start a new holiday tradition of buying multiple Groupons to see The Nutcracker, then redeeming multiple Groupons to see The Nutcracker.
Reviews
The San Diego Ballet’s innovative shows have received glowing reviews from the San Diego Union Tribune, San Diego Arts, and others: > * The encore presentation of “Sonnets” on Saturday afternoon at UCSD’s Mandeville was a rich tapestry of spoken word, a range of world music and dance styles, and some riveting performances. – Kris Eitland, San Diego Arts > * By featuring choreographer/co-director Javier Velasco’s balletic new “Rhapsody on a Theme” and his year-old “Alice: Wonderland,” which combined ballet and hip-hop, the program showed how contrasting aesthetics can coexist in a way that makes us appreciate the qualities of both. – Valerie Scher, San Diego Union Tribune
Ballet Reviews for Manly Men
Ballet is a graceful, formal style of dance requiring natural skill and years of study, but it is often seen as a feminine endeavor too girly for a man to enjoy. To overcome this stigma, Fred Kyles of Tempe, Arizona, has started Man-llet.com, an online ballet review site geared toward men. Here are some of his reviews:
The Nutcracker: “Hell yea! Trust me, bros, the babes are hot and the beers I snuck in were cold. Also, lead dancer Eloise Michelle’s arabesque penchee was astonishing. This show is so ballsy I grew a beard while watching it.”
Swan Lake: “This ballet friggin’ rocks! I had my mind blown when I realized that the famous Black Swan Pas de deux is musically an Andante, even though the choreography is Adagio. After the show, I played truck basketball.”
La Bayadere: “This show is BYON—bring your own nachos—and believe me, I did. This was a restaging of Kirov’s famous 1941 production. I had to buy a new TV after the show ‘cause, that afternoon, I shot my flat-screen because the baby elk on the hunting show I was watching was too realistic.”
