Running was popular in Europe long before it caught on in America, which is why most races are measured in kilometers and why most of the Pilgrims were eaten by bears. Race to the top of the food chain with this Groupon.

Choose Between Two Options

On Saturday, December 1, runners and walkers celebrate the coming of winter while raising funds for The Riley Children’s Hospital, the Indianapolis YMCA’s Y For All Campaign, the children of Lutherwood, and the Athenaeum Foundation. The race begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Athenaeum, with check-in from 7:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Each racer receives a long-sleeve T-shirt. Afterwards, racers can gather in the YMCA and relax.

The fourth annual Sankt Nikolaus Day Lauf 5K and 5-Mile races are held in conjunction with the St. Nikolaus Festival. The event celebrates German heritage and the arrival of its namesake saint, whose flowing gray beard and ornate robes are closely related to those of the American Santa Claus. For 28 years, the Indiana German Heritage Society has hosted the St. Nikolaus Festival, which features not only the themed race, but also a Christmas tree candle-lighting ceremony, Christmas desserts, and a range of other German holiday traditions.

Sankt Nikolaus Lauf

Several times a year, Sankt Nikolaus Lauf, LLC, embraces exercise, charity, and German heritage by hosting a costume-filled run/walk in the heart of Indianapolis. In the fall months, the race joins forces with GermanFest and invites waves of jovial runners and walkers to don lederhosen for the event. Weeks later, during the St. Nikolaus Festival, hordes of athletes don the traditional scarlet suit and flowing beard of Santa Claus for the Sankt Nikolaus Day Lauf. With numbers pinned to the backs of their seasonal ensembles and the race's starting words “Achtung, fertig, los!” ringing in their ears, racers sprint through the chilly air in pursuit of awards, festival goodies, and funds for charitable foundations.

The Groupon Guide to: Basketball Plays

Though it might seem like basketball players are just running around to maintain enough sweat to look beautiful on television, they are actually running complex offensive plays. Here are some simple plays that you can try out next time you hit the hardtop:

Dribble Drive: Each offensive player grabs a basketball and dribbles to the hoop. The one who dribbles fastest wins the points.

Pick and Roll: One of the players "picks" which teammate he believes will be the one to shoot the ball. If he is correct, the player that took the shot has to call a timeout so he can immediately get his reward—a "roll" filled with ham and creamed corn.

Backdoor Cut: This is considered the trickiest play in basketball because it requires the offensive team to distract the defense by having their coach put on a top hat, wander onto the court, and ask the defensive players if they'd like to see what his head looks like without a top hat. If the defensive players ignore the coach's distraction, the offensive players should blow on the defenders' eyes until the dryness becomes unbearable.

Which basketball player was voted most beautiful?
