The suit-making process begins with a trip to the store, where tailors take meticulous body measurements and help clients wade through imported fabrics by mills such as Loro Piana and Ariston. Dress shirts take shape from fabrics by such mills as Thomas Mason, Albini, or Riva, and hug the skin with Egyptian-cotton interlinings, a minimum of 25 stitches per inch, and a choice of cuffs, collar, and monograms. After the initial appointment, clothiers spend up to four weeks constructing the garments by hand at their shop in New York. Upon completion, customers try the suits on, request further alterations if necessary, and then begin sneaking into fancy soirees. Throughout the following year, Sartoria Ambrosiana’s tailors will alter the suit as many times as needed to keep it fitting properly.
Like the best suits, Sartoria Ambrosiana itself combines historical tradition with a modern edge. The company began in 1949 as a union between two master tailors, who set up in a little village on the outskirts of Milan. Together they crafted custom suits for Italian aristocrats and Milanese businessmen, designing their wares to move with the body, thanks to a sturdy construction, focused detail, and refusal to use papier mâché. In 2011, the shop caught the eye of professional clothier Max Farca, who purchased and relocated the company to New York City to grant American men a chance to reap the comfort and class of focused craftsmanship.
Today, master tailors Gianluca Verdelli and Andrea Fascato continue the tradition by crafting personalized ensembles from fine, imported fabrics. Made with material from such mills as Loro Piana and Vitale Barberis, each suit is fully canvassed with hand-sewn armholes, shoulders, and labels to ensure sturdy seams and natural movement. High armholes and a closer fit also help custom shirts hug the physique, and a choice of more than 1,000 fabrics ensures they’ll match any outfit.
