The Deal

Savory Spice Shop

Adding one spice to a dish can create a whole new flavor. Adding a carefully selected melange of spices can create a taste revelation—at least that's how Jackie Mittelhammer and Becky Solheim see it. To give all types of chefs that revelatory power, they opened Savory Spice Shop Westfield, where they sell more than 400 spices and herbs and over 160 original spice blends. Grinding each fresh weekly, the flavor champions combine them in bags and bottles to create such harmonious concoctions as Peruvian chile-lime seasoning and Smoky Hills cheese powder with garlic and marjoram. They also give customers the chance to spice up dishes with exotic sea salts, including black lava salt from Hawaii and Italian black truffle sea salt, as well as sauces, extracts, and specialty sugars.
