Choose from Three Options

  • $230 for a full PADI open-water-certification course (a $475 value)

Instructors take their participants through the knowledge-development course, confined-water dives, and open-water dives.

  • $145 for an advanced open-water PADI-certification course (a $300 value)

In full scuba gear, instructors guide students into the fish-rich waters of Haigh Quarry in Kankakee to practice basic and more advanced scuba techniques in an outdoor environment. A platform just above the quarry bottom prevents visibility obstruction from silt and the underwater dog from getting out.

  • $135 for a PADI open-water referral, knowledge development, and confined-water course (a $275 value)

Instructors help students develop their knowledge of scuba principles, such as water pressure and how to set up dive gear, before guiding them into confined-pool sessions, where they teach dive technique and emergency procedures. Customers can choose between two 4.5-hour pool sessions or four 2-hour sessions.

Classes take place at the Prairie Valley Family YMCA in Elgin or the Alfred Campanelli YMCA in Schaumburg, although students must visit the Sea Lions Dive Center first to complete paperwork. Each course includes tanks, regulators, gauges, buoyancy-compensator jackets, weights, and belts. However, students must bring or rent their own masks, snorkels, boots, and fins. All students also receive 10% off purchases at the shop, including masks, which can be swapped out for free if they don't fit.

Sea Lions Dive Center

A five-star PADI instructor-development center, Sea Lions Dive Center gathers a team of friendly instructors who train aspiring divers and budding dive instructors toward their certification. They help students plunge into the water at local quarries and in Lake Michigan for technique-refresher courses and open-water-dive certification, as well as specialized training in cavern and ice diving, underwater digital photography, and advanced fish heckling. When not leading local classes and helping to maintain the dive shop's relaxed atmosphere, staff instructors also lead monthly trips to regional destinations, such as North Carolina and Florida, or the far-flung waters of the Maldives and Indonesia.

The Groupon Guide to: Bumper Stickers

With the government cracking down on the Internet and dirty video games, the only public forum we have left is bumper stickers. These are the best ones to pump up your bump:

  • "My other child is an honor student"
  • "I LOVE SPROTS!"
  • "There’s a troll in my trunk. Just kidding! I wish I weren’t though. I wish magic was real."
  • "I hate some of the presidents"
  • Calvin peeing on the words “public urination”
  • “Coke-exist” spelled using the Coke logos
  • "Don’t like my driving? Call 1-800-SORRYME for a prerecorded message of me apologizing"

Don’t blame me. I tried my best at being president.
