- Certification allows divers to reach depths up to 60 feet
- Takes place at one of two class times: a two-day session on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or a two-week session on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
$145 for an advanced open-water PADI certification course (a $300 value)
- Certification allows divers to reach depths up to 120 feet
- Participants must already have a PADI open-water certification (or equivalent)
- Class times vary; please call to arrange times
During the full open-water course, instructors first help students develop their knowledge of scuba principles, such as equalizing pressure and how to set up dive gear, before guiding them into confined-pool sessions to impart basic dive techniques and emergency procedures. Later, classes head to open waters to practice their skills in a real outdoor environment. For students with existing certifications, the advanced class dives right into more advanced techniques, as instructors help divers learn to reach depths of up to 120 feet, where the pressure can make even a CEO sweat.
Equipment rental (tanks, regulators, etc.) is only included for the in-pool dives, though students may rent equipment to use during open-water sessions for an additional fee. Personal gear (masks, fins, etc.) is also not included, but Groupon customers receive a 10% discount on any purchases at the Sea Lions Dive Center shop.
Sea Lions Dive Center
A five-star PADI instructor-development center, Sea Lions Dive Center gathers a team of friendly instructors who train aspiring divers and budding dive instructors toward their certification. They help students plunge into the water at local quarries and in Lake Michigan for technique-refresher courses and open-water-dive certification, as well as specialized training in cavern and ice diving, underwater digital photography, and advanced fish heckling. When not leading local classes and helping to maintain the dive shop's relaxed atmosphere, staff instructors also lead monthly trips to regional destinations, such as North Carolina and Florida, or the far-flung waters of the Maldives and Indonesia.
