Contrary to popular belief, boats are actually much safer than cars, which inexplicably sink every time you drive them on water. Take a proper water road ride with this Groupon.

Choose a sunny sky or starlit night for your setting as you travel down the three branches of the Chicago River. During 60-minute architecture tours, knowledgeable guides explain the history behind more than 40 landmark buildings, including the Tribune Tower, the Wrigley Building, and the Willis Tower. Both tours depart from Gateway Park at Navy Pier or from the docks along the Chicago River on the northeast corner of the Michigan Avenue Bridge. Boats are equipped with bathrooms and a cash bar and allow leashed dogs onboard.

Shoreline Sightseeing

Shoreline Sightseeing has been whisking passengers along Lake Michigan since 1939. Traveling down the reverse-engineered Chicago River, Shoreline’s architecture tours explore the history of the city’s landmark buildings—from the Great Fire of 1871 to the work of famed architects Mies van der Rohe and Jeanne Gang. Colorful bursts illuminate the sky during fireworks cruises, and nighttime tours allow for glimpses of lit-up buildings. Classic lake tours drift into Lake Michigan, giving passengers a chance to espy the whole city, and water taxis connect visitors from one destination to the next, speeding between Navy Pier, the Museum Campus, Michigan Ave., and the Willis Tower.

Out of all the touristy activities I did in Chicago, this is the number one must worthwhile activity.
