Members of both urban and rural low-income communities across the country have limited access to the outdoors, depriving them of valuable life experiences amidst ecosystems brimming with diverse flora and fauna. Exploring the outside world imbues children with a sense of self, an improved imagination, an eagerness for exercise, and an appreciation of nature. Due to safety concerns and the remoteness of greenery, underserved families go without the benefits of the great outdoors, instead spending their time engaging in sedentary activities such as watching television and playing video games. The Sierra Club organizes and supports environmental education, community outreach programs, and sponsored wilderness trips to improve people's connection with the natural world.
The nonprofit’s Inner City Outings (ICO) program organizes entertaining and educational wilderness trips for young people who have no other access to nature. Every year volunteer groups help more than 14,000 children to enjoy the outdoors safely and responsibly through more than 800 activities, including group hiking, boating, and camping adventures. In addition to encouraging children’s physical activity and fresh air consumption, ICO provides outdoor-skills training, teamwork, and leadership opportunities and fosters interpersonal skills and a sense of respect between children of various backgrounds. ICO also builds support for environmental protection in urban areas by demonstrating the wild beauty of nature to people firsthand, inspiring them to preserve it for future generations. This campaign will create more ICO groups and increase funding for program-participant recruiting, transforming the lives of underserved children with the majesty of wilderness.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to give children from low-income neighborhoods an opportunity to explore the outdoors, with donations up to $75,000 matched by an anonymous donor. If G-Team members raise $10,000, 400 inner-city kids will get a chance to experience nature on a sponsored trip, improving their sense of exploration and appreciation for the outdoors. Each additional $25 raised will fund a trip for one child.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
