Though children are taught to reach for the sky, in time it becomes apparent that jumping out of the sky is more empowering. Pull off the finer of two feats with today's deal: for $110, you get a tandem jump at Skydive Monroe, a $190 value. The jump site is a short drive from the University of Georgia and about 40 miles east of downtown Atlanta in Monroe. You'll receive a one-hour instructional course in equipment and safety training before taking off from the Monroe-Walton County Airport and making your tandem jump.
When falling from 14,000 feet, the best thing to be strapped to is a go-go-gadget copter or, failing that, one of the certified sky captains at Skydive Monroe, a member of the United States Parachute Association. With hours of jumping experience and hundreds of first-time jumpers under his or her wing, only jumpmasters and USPA-certified instructors will be your tandem companion. Using state-of-the-art equipment and a single drop of Peregrine Falcon sweat, jumpers and instructors will slice through cloud tops at top speeds. Once your velocity stabilizes, select a drink from the beverage cart before the time comes to pop open the chute and gently flutter back to solid ground. Wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes to ensure a comfortable flight and safe landing.
People who are scared of heights expect to be scared stiff by jumping out of an airplane and hurtling through the air, but many of them are surprised to find they're totally comfortable. People who skydive say the feeling of pure freedom is unparalleled, the adrenaline rush is addictive, facing one's fears is satisfying, and falling out of the sky is pretty good.
There is a tandem jump weight limit of 225 lbs for men and 170 lbs for women. You must be 18 or older, and signing a waiver is mandatory.
Reviews
One DropZone.com reviewer and an Insider Pager each give Skydive Monroe a perfect five stars:
- The instructors will help you have a safe and wonderful time jumping from the plane, even if you are fantasizing about being James Bond on a secret mission. – Julie C., Insider Pages
- the owner right away came up and introduced himself, gave me a tour of the facilities and introduced me to some other skydivers who I might like to jump with...I checked out a few other DZ's around ATL and this was by far my fav! – shinyhapy, DropZone.com

Post-Skydive Conversations
Safe and carefully regulated skydiving remains a remarkable human feat. Beyond the sheer excitement of your tandem dive, you’ll also have the memories, sense of accomplishment, and perspective that only seeing the world from above can bring. Here’s a typical post-skydiving water cooler conversation:
“Oh, hey Eileen.”
“Hey, Dodger. How was your weekend?”
“Man, don’t get me started. I must’ve drank like seven Coke Zeros and stayed up all night watching Season 1 of Fringe. I mean, literally, the entire season. It was nuts. How about you?”
“Oh, not too much. I briefly left the world, cruising to altitudes untouched by the concerns of man, and then flew, as one might fly in a dream, unencumbered on a cushion of pure exhilaration, the clouds themselves swimming through my fingertips as the geometry of creation was laid out before me in the majestic perfection that surrounds us, hidden by its very enormity. Is Fringe worth checking out?”
