In a Nutshell

Donations provide housewarming kits with cleaning supplies for families transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing

The Fine Print

The Issue: Transition to Permanent Housing

Spokane County has a homeless population of about 1,300 people, according to data from the City of Spokane Human Services Department. Last year, SNAP helped 605 people transition into permanent housing. However, many families emerging from homelessness still lack important personal items such as clothing, furniture, and home supplies to help them settle in.

The Campaign: Providing Housewarming Kits for Families

If 30 people donate $12 to this Grassroots campaign, then SNAP can provide housewarming kits for 30 families transitioning out of homelessness. The kit contains light bulbs, a shower curtain, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies such as a toilet brush, dish soap, and sponges. Each additional $12 raised will fund a housewarming kit for another family.

SNAP

For 50 years, SNAP has led efforts to reduce poverty and homelessness in the Spokane area. In 1966, Father Frank Bach established three community centers to help local families in need. Over time, the organization grew and began to broaden its focus beyond alleviating basic needs to include in-depth forms of assistance as well. Today, SNAP's staff members work with people experiencing homelessness to find housing and take steps toward achieving self-sufficiency. SNAP's services include money management workshops, small business development, weatherization work, energy-efficiency loans and food grants— as well as family-development and life-skills classes to teach families how to achieve stability in their rental situations.
