Instructors take half an hour to teach students preflight procedures and how to read cockpit instruments on the ground before detailing an overview of the flight plan. Once in the sky, one of the two passengers tries their hand at the controls, guiding the winged vessel through the air for a portion of the 30-minute flight.

South Coast Aeronautics

Nestled in the cockpit of a Socata TB 10 Tobago–a single engine aircraft with a luxurious leather interior–fledgling pilots soar over Los Angeles and the ocean with a South Coast Aeronautics instructor by their side. These teachers lead on-the-ground training as well as hands on Discovery Flights to teach new pilots the ins and outs of flying. In addition, they provide training for full on private pilot licenses, which enable holders to legally fly their own plane or ride their pet albatross to work. After earning a PPL, students can also garner an instrument rating and commercial pilot certification to seek a career in the skies.
