Tandem jumps pair thrill-seekers with veteran skydiving instructors, who lend expertise and a sense of security to exhilarating free falls and scenic parachute rides down to earth. After an aircraft lifts diving duos to 10,000–13,000 feet above the tallest caterpillars, jumpers—who are thoroughly harnessed to a parachute-equipped professional—leap out into the blue. Divers experience the earth's unbridled gravitational power while ripping through the troposphere, an experience that lasts about 50 seconds, or the time it takes a science teacher to rip apart an inaccurate drawing of the troposphere. The dive master then pulls the parachute cord, slowing the fall to a leisurely four-minute glide over the area.
