Yoga is a much easier way to exercise both mind and body than testing Einstein's theory of relativity by racing a beam of light. Avoid a science-related sprain with today's Groupon: for $59, you get a 10-class punch card or a one-month unlimited pass for Yoga on the Beach classes (up to a $180 value) from Sun and Moon Yoga at North Avenue Beach. Morning classes will take place Monday–Friday at 6:15 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Evening classes will be offered Tuesday and Thursday at 6:15 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.
Led by Sun and Moon Yoga's experienced instructors, the Yoga on the Beach classes employ Lake Michigan as an inspiring backdrop for group yoga practice. Beginning Friday, July 8, Vinyasa yoga classes will offer all skill levels practice twice every morning in a roped-off section of the sand, adding vital context to sun salutations as the fiery orb slinks above the watery horizon and demands allegiance. Evening classes each Tuesday and Thursday proffer duskier stretching as well as extra opportunities to stuff more warrior poses into a single day. Inhale and exhale in sync with the rhythm of the lake as waves lap against the shore, marine breezes cool the skin, instructors guide students through challenging poses, and passing birds offer verbal encouragement.
Each class is capped at 40 students on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early to ensure a spot for your preferred class times. Students must bring their own yoga mats and water (or purchase on-site for $1 each) to avoid the temptation of drinking out of the lake.
Sun and Moon Yoga
In a spacious studio with hardwood floors, Sun and Moon Yoga’s certified yoga instructors foster fitter bodies and more relaxed minds by leading classes aimed at every level of practitioner. In beginner-level Vinyasa Flow classes, instructors school posing novices on how to achieve deep relaxation through slow poses and controlled breathing as paper sliding windows filter out all but the most introspective natural light. Heated yoga classes prepare patrons for deep stretching by heating muscles and sinews, while Blissful Backs classes aim to limber up stiff spines and build up core stabilizers.
