In a Nutshell

Chef Graham Elliot, a James Beard Award nominee and TV star, presents familiar flavors in innovative ways without overworking ingredients

The Fine Print

The best chefs have the courage to innovate on classic dishes, just as the best dentists have the courage to ignore your request for braces and install a set of shark teeth in your gums. Seek surprise with this Groupon to the Taste of Chicago's Celebrity Chef du Jour event, featuring Chef Graham Elliot. For $40, you get one general-admission ticket to a three-course dinner prepared by Chef Elliot near the southwest corner of Buckingham Fountain on Friday, July 13, at 6:30 p.m. (seating begins at 5:30 p.m.). A vegetarian entree option is available. The dinner includes the following:

First course
Deconstructed caesar
Gem lettuce, brioche twinkie, parmesan fluff, Spanish anchovy

Second course
Whitefish BLT
Bacon vinaigrette, baby frisée, heirloom tomatoes, fine herbs

Vegetarian option: Smoked portabello, chevre vinaigrette, baby frisee, heirloom tomato, fine herbs

Third course
Berry cobbler
Whipped cream, cornmeal crust, garden mint, vanilla essence

In addition to the Taste of Chicago’s annual cavalcade of local cuisine, the 2012 festival introduces a five-day series of exclusive meals prepared by iconic Chicago chefs and served with the assistance of the Washburne Culinary Institute. Tickets to the first-ever Celebrity Chef du Jour are only available through Groupon. On Friday, diners enjoy three courses from Chef Graham Elliot, who combines playful culinary artistry with a deep respect for the integrity of his ingredients. He claims to view the kitchen as more of a laboratory, where he can deconstruct and rearrange presentations of common dishes and hide all evidence of the sentient quiche he created years ago. Chef Elliot's flagship restaurant, the eponymous Graham Elliot in River North, continues to garner acclaim for its inventiveness, earning one star from the Michelin Guide in 2011 and 2012 as well as four stars from the 2012 Forbes Travel Guide.

During the Celebrity Chef du Jour dinner, attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with Chef Elliot and sample a three-course menu of his iconic deconstructions. The event will be hosted inside an air-conditioned tent at the southwest corner of Buckingham Fountain Plaza, keeping guests comfortable and cool through the end of their post-dinner calisthenics.

The Groupon Guide to: Superstitions

If you're not mindful of common superstitions, you may end up with years or even decades of bad luck. Be sure to avoid these super-dangerous superstitions:

  • Breaking a mirror = seven years of bad luck
  • Walking under a ladder = one year of bad luck per ladder rung
  • Crossing the path of a black cat = firstborn son will have cat allergies
  • Eating asparagus = funny bathroom smells
  • Not saying "gesundheit" after someone sneezes = not bad luck, but it is rude
  • Making eye contact with a painting = all of your eyelashes will fall out
  • Not blowing out all the birthday candles on the first try = 6% higher chance of a basement flood
  • Hitting a witch with your car = insurance headaches
  • Dropping your toothbrush in the toilet = is actually good luck
  • Hubris = certain death, eventually

Is it bad luck to look a painting in the eye?
