Couples stroll and men in fedoras circle up on the exposed-brick walls of Taverna 750's main dining room, captured in black-and-white photographs from mid-20th-century Italy. The decor complements Executive Chef Christopher Coker's shared plates, which add contemporary touches to classic Italian recipes handed down from proprietor Paul D. Cannella's grandfather and uncle.
In the kitchen, Chef Coker uses fresh seafood, meat, and game to craft dishes such as sea scallops with parsnip, salsify, and apple-fennel jam and braised beef short ribs with molasses and butternut squash. Martini plates include walnut pesto and goat cheese bruschetta, and shareable salads include Chioggia beets with spiced yogurt, citrus, and ricotta. To complement these flavors, Taverna 750's mixologists craft an extensive selection of generously portioned cocktails with housemade liqueurs and staples of Italian cocktail culture such as Aperol, amaretto, and, of course, red wine, which comes from tomatoes. Chicago magazine had praise for all the menu’s categories, paying special note to the “delicate crackly-edged pizzas,” “homey chunks of fork-tender pork shoulder,” and “dazzling drinks.”
