The Fine Print

The Issue: Caregivers Lack Time for Personal Rest

When elderly people or people with disabilities need care, another family member often commits to being the caregiver. These caregivers provide 24/7 assistance to prevent their loved ones from being placed in a facility outside the home. Yet in doing so, they often give up all their free time, devoting it instead to aiding the care recipient. This is where respite care comes in. With respite care, a chosen caregiver will provide temporary relief for individuals who are caring for family members so that they can take time to care for themselves. They can use this to take a break from everyday stresses and get out of the house or to take care of more demanding household tasks.

The Campaign: Pampering Caregivers at Appreciation Event

If 50 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Tennessee Respite Coalition can organize a caregiver-pampering appreciation event with a variety of relaxing activities, such as hairstyling, lunches, and hand and foot massages, for 50–100 caregivers. With this event, professional caregivers will provide family members with time so that they can gain much-needed relaxation from the stresses of caring for a loved one nonstop. Afterward, they can return to their family members and be better able to care for them. The Giving Care to Caregivers 11th Annual Recognition Event will run on Thursday, November 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Green Hills Senior Health Center. Each additional $10 raised will go toward funding eight pampering events across Tennessee.

Tennessee Respite Coalition

The Tennessee Respite Coalition (TRC) works with family caregivers across the state of Tennessee to help provide them with short-term, temporary relief from their duties caring for adults or children with disabilities or special needs. Temporary relief can enable caregivers to satisfy their own needs and get a much-needed break from the demands of providing ongoing care. 

TRC assists caregivers who look after individuals of any age, and allows them to choose their own respite provider. While their loved ones are cared for, caregivers may engage in a variety of activities, from taking a trip to spending time with other family members and catching up on other errands such as grocery shopping. In the past year, TRC has provided more than 200 families across the state of Tennessee with access to respite services.
