Texas Photographic Workshops’ experienced photo gurus Doug Box and Randy Kerr impart practical photo skills to curious shutterbugs during seminars held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The hands-on session immerses beginner and intermediate students in the inner workings of their digital cameras, showing them how to manipulate menu settings, f-stops, and shutter speed. The lessons also cultivate artistic development by spending time on what makes a good composition, in addition to strategies for when to use a flash and how to get the family dog to juggle for the camera. Questions are encouraged, and a 90-minute lunch break at noon encourages students to rest their minds, to practice, and to mingle with their peers amid lush garden scenery. After the workshops, pupils can use their new knowledge to practice outside and capture shots of native Texan flora.

Doug Box, author of myriad photography-technique books, is one of 13 Kodak mentors and sits on the board for Professional Photographers of America. His coteacher, Randy Kerr, heads World Photographic, which uses photography as a vehicle for illuminating humanitarian and environmental topics. Both men have been teaching photography classes for years, and can help amateurs take photos that capture piercing looks, toothy smiles, and elusive dodo sightings much more efficiently than papier-mâché sculptures.
