The Art of Control

Studio director Simona Cipriani, like all the instructors at The Art of Control, trained under Romana Kryzanowska, who studied directly under Joseph Pilates himself. The studio, therefore, prides itself on being not only certified, but a direct ideological descendant of Pilates' very inventor.

Many clients come to The Art of Control to take part in group or private lessons, and particularly advanced students can get specialized independent instruction. More than one type of Pilates is practiced at the studio. In mat Pilates, participants work through routines atop their own colorful rectangles, and in reformer Pilates, the Pilates-proprietary workout machines provides resistance to counter participants’ movements, creating an additional strength-training element to build strength and muscle definition. Other classes may incorporate props, such as bands, wedges, and rubber chickens wearing novelty-size sunglasses. Feldenkrais and Zumba classes also speckle the calendar, and teacher-training programs prepare students to teach. Personalized nutrition programs and massage therapy further spoil bodies and increase health. The Art of Control also hosts and participates in events and workshops.

The Groupon Guide to: Remaining Calm

Life is full of stressful situations that challenge our ability to remain calm. Whether you're in the middle of a heated debate or being chased by a gaggle of exes, use these techniques to remain even-tempered:

Take a Deep Breath: Feeling air slowly enter and leave your lungs will remind you that nothing really matters because we are all just balloons that move air around.

Count to 10: Ten is the most calming number because when turned sideways it looks like a thin man sleeping on a big, round rock. He's freer than any of us.

Think about Something Positive: You'll feel better if you imagine something peaceful such as a smiling child, a clear blue sky, or a horse playfully biting his master's hand.

Repeat a Positive Mantra: Many people are soothed by chanting "this too shall pass," and others like to repeat "I'm the one in charge, I sail my own barge."

Which number looks like a free man? Find out in today's Groupon Guide.
