In a Nutshell

WFTDA’s newest team breaks in its skates on its home track during a season of hard-nosed bouts

The Fine Print

America has always been the most extreme country, from the Boston Tea Punchings to having the first man swear on the moon. We hold this shredding guitar solo to be self-evident with this GrouponLive deal to see the Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirls at The Bank of Kentucky Center in Highland Heights. Choose from the following options:

  • For $9, you get a single-bout package for two (up to a $45 total value), which includes:

    • Two tickets to any regular-season home bout (up to a $30 value)
    • Two merchandise vouchers, valid for $5 worth of merchandise each
    • A parking pass (a $5 value)

  • For $19, you get a season-ticket package for one (a $65 total value), which includes:

    • One ticket to every regular-season home bout, including parking (a $60 value)
    • One merchandise voucher, valid for $5 worth of merchandise

  • For $30, you get a single-bout package for five (up to a $105 total value), which includes:

    • Five tickets to any regular-season home bout (up to a $75 value)
    • Five merchandise vouchers, valid for $5 worth of merchandise each
    • One parking pass (a $5 value)

All tickets are for general-admission seating. Doors open at 6 p.m.—one hour before the usual 7 p.m. start time. Children aged 6 and younger receive free admission. See the team's schedule for upcoming bouts.

The newest members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, the Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirls eschew soft summer breezes for hard hits and pileups as they clash elbow pads with their newfound rivals. During each bout, the team's lady combatants shove aside their normal personas—from soap-makers to systems analysts—to strap on roller skates and unleash their fierce alter egos with names such as Florence Nite-n-Hell and Wicked Caroline. The squad’s mixture of passion and talent was also the focal point of a 2009 documentary entitled Black-n-Bluegrass, in which the girls discuss the aspects of the sport and cast aside common misconceptions, such as that the skaters’ helmets actually house their oversized brains.

The Bank of Kentucky Center's arena-style seating ensures unfettered views of the action, especially from the “suicide seating” down on the floor, available only for spectators aged 18 and older. During halftime or timeouts, fans can haul in a variety of souvenirs, such as stickers and buttons ($1), T-shirts ($10+), and koozies ($5) in which to keep cans from making noise while dragged behind a car.

Though the Black-n-Bluegrass Rollergirls sometimes feature a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.

The Groupon Guide to: Choosing a PIN

Until an ATM can identify its user by odor or how hard he or she hugs it, you will have to log in with a personal identification number. Here are some ways to come up with a memorable four-digit code:

  • Year of birth
  • Year of first kiss
  • Year of last kiss
  • Number of friends you wish you had
  • Number of horses you tell people you have
  • Last four digits of pi
  • Expiration date of milk that's been inside your refrigerator for a few years
  • Number of states in the US if you were president
  • Autoignition temperature of an acoustic guitar
  • Four numbers that, when added together, equal a different number
  • 1234
  • Estimated number of days you'll spend alone in life, rounded to the nearest thousand

Are 50 states a few too many?
