At the wildest concerts, singers have been known to throw themselves into the crowd and end their sentences with prepositions. In the 1980s, a handful of bands took thrash from the underground to the forefront, inviting listeners into their brakeless speed-metal vehicles and leaving skid marks across the pop charts. In 2013, some of the most revered outfits in the history of thrash return to their roots—sharpened, harder, and faster than ever.

If the world runs out of jackhammers, it still has the pneumatic music of Testament. The platinum-selling warhorse of Testament is able to drill straight to the earth’s core in the first 30 seconds of any of its songs. The belles of MTV’s Headbangers Ball and gateway band to hard metal have refused to tread water since their debut album, The Legacy, which first throttled listeners in 1987. Testament paints a slaughterhouse soundscape with Eric Peterson and Alex Skolnick’s dueling guitar melodies, Greg Christian’s ribcage-rattling bass lines, Gene Hoglan’s galloping drums, and Chuck Billy’s gravelly, declarative barks. In support of its latest album, Dark Roots of the Earth, Testament scares the sun back into its hole with serrated new tracks such as “Native Blood” and epic favorites such as “Over the Wall” and “Disciples on the Watch.”

With the exception of personnel and pants, Overkill hasn’t changed a thing since 1980, and it’s made the group one of the best-selling thrash bands in history. Like the Lennon and McCartney of aural carnage, singer Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth and bassist D. D. Verni write the songs that ignite worldwide mosh pits, and their latest album, The Electric Age, has all the intensity of fan favorites such as Under the Influence and Years of Decay. With original lead singer Erik A. K.’s operatic wail and guitarists Ed Carlson and Michael Gilbert’s harmonic histrionics, Arizona’s Flotsam and Jetsam burns through decades' worth of wrecking-ball classics and ugly noise from its latest album, Ugly Noise. Representing the new generation of thrash, Australia’s 4ARM starts the show with breakneck time-signature changes, enraged guitar riffs, and Danny Tomb’s heaving vocals as the band lobs audio grenades from its recent Submission for Liberty.
