Running a race is one of the great human challenges, alongside raising a child and peeling a ripe mango without basically ruining it. Go the distance with this Groupon.
- $59 for entry for one in The Inferno (up to a $139 value)
The 13.1-mile obstacle race takes place on Saturday, August 31. Participants—who must be 18 or older—get a commemorative t-shirt, a custom finisher's medal, entry into the after party, and one beer (for participants 21 and older). Heats of up to 125 people begin at 8 a.m. and continue every half-hour until 2 p.m. The fastest competitors typically finish the race in about two-and-a-half hours. Friends and family of competitors can watch for free, though parking is not included and they must sign a waiver.
The Inferno's designers don't consider mud much of a challenge, even if it's in a pit. So instead of wet dirt, they fill their 13.1-mile course with more than 20 obstacles, each designed to push the human body to its limits. Monkey bars, crawls under barbed wire, and a quarter-mile swim all intersect racers on their paths to victory. At one point, they even find "hurdles" made of fire. A celebration kicks off as soon as each runner reaches the finish line. Live musicians score The Inferno's after party, where organizers hand out competitive awards and more playful accolades, such as biggest beard and best costume. They also hand each participant a cool beer, provided they're old enough.
The event requires its participants to be in shape and train in advance. Luckily, The Inferno's organizers supply a work-out plan to help participants prep, combining elements of Crossfit, Insanity, P90X, and other workouts.
