The Issue: Pittsburgh Youth in Need of Qualified Mentors

For youth, there are numerous benefits of a mentorship relationship with a caring, qualified adult, such as less drug and alcohol use, improved confidence and communication skills, and a better chance of going on to higher education, as reported in a study released by Mentoring in America. More than 20,000 youth are currently enrolled in local mentoring programs in Pittsburgh. However, nearly 1,000 remain on formal waitlists because there are not enough mentors to fill the need, according to data furnished by The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern PA. By training more qualified mentors, the community can ensure that each child on the waitlist has a chance to benefit from a mentor-mentee relationship.

The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern PA

The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern PA (MPSWPA) recruits, trains, and prepares volunteers to make positive impacts on local youth through a network of 146 local mentoring programs. The partnership’s education curriculum covers topics that are vital to the mentor-mentee relationship, such as communication skills, cultural diversity, and setting boundaries, so that mentors can offer the best support possible to the youth they're paired with. Annually, more than 1,400 mentors complete the training process and go on to connect with local youth through programs such as the Promise Coaches campaign, which helps local high-school students graduate. Additionally, the MPSWPA consults with mentoring programs to streamline their processes and improve results.
