The Mexican Museum

Artist Peter Rodriguez founded The Mexican Museum in 1975 to celebrate art created by Mexican and Mexican-American artists. But since then, the museum's scope has expanded and now includes the aesthetic expressions of Mexicans, Chicanos, and Latinos. According to the staff, no other museum in the U.S. houses as large a permanent collection from these groups.

  • Size: the museum keeps over 15,000 art objects divided into five areas: Pre-Hispanic Art, Colonial Art, Popular Art, Mexican and Latin American Art, and Mexican American, Chicano and Latino Contemporary Art
  • Permanent Collection: an active exhibition program showcases a permanent collection that includes ancient culture, contemporary art, and more
  • Don't Miss: Dialogos Gráficos a celebration of Mexico's printmaking traditions from the early 1900s through today, focusing on the contributions of José Guadalupe Posada and the artist's print collective Taller de Gráfica Popular
  • Past Exhibit: the Tequila Don Julio Collection celebrated 17 contemporary artists, including three from the Bay Area: Viva Paredes, Caleb Duarte, and Julio César Morales
  • Family Time: the museum hosts periodic Free Family Sundays, where kids and their families craft their own masterpieces in workshops led by local artists
  • Take Something Home: the museum shop La Tienda displays crafts from the countries represented in the museum
  • Pro Tip: groups can arrange for a docent to lead a complimentary tour of the museum, allowing them to delve deeper into its art and history
